Educational opportunities

The VCU Department of Anesthesiology offers residency and fellowship programs that prepare our graduates for practice in both private and academic settings.

In addition to our core residency in anesthesiology, VCU provides subspecialty fellowships in adult cardiology anesthesiology, regional anesthesiology and acute pain, and chronic pain medicine. Our department also offers a year-long research position and global education opportunities.

Our Programs

Anesthesiology Residency

Our residency program trains strong clinicians and future experts in the field of anesthesiology through research, didactic teaching and complex clinical experiences.

Regional Anesthesia/Acute Pain Fellowship

Fellows gain experience in a wide range of skills associated with regional anesthesiology, utilizing state of the art ultrasound guided techniques to perform single shot and catheter blocks.

Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship

The cardiothoracic fellowship provides advanced education and clinical experience in caring for patients undergoing surgical procedures of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.

Chronic Pain Medicine Fellowship

This fellowship, offered through the VCU Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, provides fellows with skills for the treatment of painful disorders due to spine and non-spine origins.

Global education

The VCU International Anesthesia Program and faculty collaborate on capacity building projects in Europe, Africa, Asia and Central/South America, working toward developing sustainable surgical systems.
