Welcome to the Division of Obstetric Anesthesia
The Division of Obstetric Anesthesia cares for 2,000-3,000 patients annually, many of whom are high-risk obstetric patients. We are the only tertiary referral center for high-risk obstetrics in the central Virginia area. We provide significant clinical experience in managing both low- and high-risk obstetric patients. The majority of patients elect neuraxial analgesia for labor and delivery. The overall cesarean delivery rate is 24.6%, one of the lowest in the region.
We provide 24-hour in-house obstetric anesthesia care that includes outpatient antenatal consultation and multidisciplinary care planning, analgesia/anesthesia management of labor and delivery and postpartum pain evaluation. Obstetric anesthesia is unique in the sense that most patients remain awake during surgery and the mother and fetus needs have to be considered.
The division of Obstetric Anesthesiology is focused on maternal and fetal well-being, safety, medical education and research.
