Division of Anesthesia Critical Care
The Department of Anesthesiology plays a major role in delivery of critical care services at VCU Health. We currently provide the majority of attending coverage for Cardiac ICU, Neuroscience ICU and Vibra Hospital (long-term acute care and pulmonary), as well as contributing to the surgical, Level 1 Trauma, burns and transplant critical care services. It is an attending-lead service with support from fellows, residents, interns and medical students.
The critical care service is busy with a large range of elective and emergent cases with different pathologies, giving enormous educational opportunity to residents. The department runs a POCUS ultrasound course for all anesthesia trainees, so the use of ultrasound to guide fluid therapy, optimise hemodynamics and diagnose life threatening or pulmonary abnormalities is now a standard of care. Hemodynamic monitoring is also mandated in high-risk or sepsis patients, with research opportunities using new Hypotensive Predictive Index (HPI) software programs. There are many other areas for research, particularly neuroscience. The department works in collaboration with the VA Health System and a joint anesthesia critical care fellowship is expected to start in the near future.
